Automatic Translation

How It Works

  1. Visitor selects a language from the switcher
  2. Plugin checks if translation exists in cache
  3. If not cached, content is sent to Google Translate API
  4. Translation is returned and displayed
  5. Translation is cached for future use
  6. Advantages

    • Instant: Content is available in all languages immediately
    • Scalable: Handles thousands of pages without manual effort
    • Low Maintenance: New content is automatically translated
    • Cost-Effective: For high-volume sites, cheaper than hiring translators
    • Limitations

    • Quality Varies: Machine translation isn’t perfect
    • Context Issues: May miss nuances, idioms, or cultural references
    • API Costs: Pay per character translated
    • Technical Terms: May mistranslate specialized vocabulary
    • Brand Names: Might translate words that shouldn’t be translated
    • Best Use Cases

    • News and blog sites with frequent updates
    • Documentation sites
    • Community forums
    • Content-heavy sites where perfect translation isn’t critical
    • Internal company portals
    • Configuration

Location: ShahiTranslate Pro → Settings → General

    • Set Translation Engine to “Automatic”
    • Go to API Settings tab
    • Enter Google Translate API key
    • Configure API settings:
    • Version: V2 (standard) or V3 (advanced)
      Format: HTML or Text
Model: Base or NMT (Neural Machine Translation)

      Cost Management

Pricing: ~$20 per 1 million characters (Google Translate API)

      Reducing Costs:

    • Enable aggressive caching (cache for 90+ days)
    • Exclude unnecessary content (navigation, comments)
    • Use lazy loading for below-fold content
    • Implement manual overrides for key pages
    • Set monthly budget limits in Google Cloud Console
    • Manual Translation

      How It Works

    • You create translations for all content using the Translation Editor
    • Translations are stored in the database
    • When visitors select a language, manual translations are displayed
    • No API calls, no automatic translation
    • Advantages

    • Cultural Adaptation: Localize content appropriately
    • Brand Control: Maintain exact brand voice and terminology

    • Limitations

    • Time-Intensive: Requires significant effort to translate all content
    • Ongoing Work: New content must be manually translated

    • Delays: Translations may lag behind content updates
